Wheat-Free Indian Food

More and more people are discovering that they’re gluten intolerant and are choosing to cut wheat (and other gluten containing foods) out of their diet. Thankfully, wheat free Indian food is usually really easy to find.

Gluten is a protein found in oats, barley and wheat. Those who are intolerant can’t digest this protein properly, which means little particles of gluten seep through the gut into the bloodstream, where the immune system mistakes them for invading microbes, triggering the same response as when we get a cold or infection.

If you’re gluten intolerant you’ll probably get a bad tummy, indigestion, nausea or heartburn and other problems such as insomnia or anxiety. For those with coeliac disease eating gluten can be life-threatening if untreated, so it pays to be cautious.

It’s easy to find Indian wheat free recipes. Wheat flour is sometimes used to thicken sauces and make traditional breads like Roti and Naan. However, you can use Gram flour for thickening, and it’s even possible to make corn-based chapattis.
